I’m fortunate enough to be working as an attaché of the Island Games, where the island I am the attaché for is the Isle of Man.
Since the Island Games started in 1985, the Isle of Man has shown up and given it their all each time, resulting in it being the third most successful participant with nearly 1500 medals earned.
That’s pretty impressive for somewhere that’s home to around 85,000 people!
As the home of Olympic silver medallist Mark Cavendish, the Isle of Man has a strong cycling team, but they’re no slouch when it comes to the other sports either.
The Island Games coming to Orkney is a once-in-a-lifetime moment that really inspired me to become a volunteer.
I want to be part of this incredible moment and really get immersed in meeting new people and forging connections that will last a lifetime.
I can imagine in years to come people looking back fondly on these Games and remembering Orkney as the special corner of the world that it is.
Part of my role as an attaché is to make the guests feel as welcome as possible.
I had no idea just how many people were involved in the Island Games.
It was a shock to begin with, but now that everything is coming together, I can see how vital a role everyone is playing to make the Island Games possible.
If you have the chance to come out and support the Games, you absolutely should because it will be a truly unforgettable experience.
We will be charting the Island Games, and the Scholes team’s contributions, as they unfold.
