Why you should pursue a career in accounting – your burning questions answered

What a lot of people do not realise about accounting is the tangible impact that you have on shaping the businesses you work with.

I have developed a great insight into a wide range of businesses, which is truly interesting and fulfilling, as I have developed such a range of skills.

This has enabled me to better support the businesses in the local community as I play a vital part in shaping business decisions by giving business owners better control of their finances.

As you progress through your career, the impact you have grows as well, so it is consistently rewarding.

Is accounting work boring?

Not at all!

Accounting work can actually be quite varied.

When working with a range of businesses, each one brings its own challenges and something to learn.

Accounting is a career path where you get out what you put in.

I have been able to build strong relationships with clients and I know that I will deepen and strengthen these relationships as I progress in my career.

Is Scholes a good place to work?

Scholes has supported my growth by providing plenty of opportunities to work independently so that I can build my confidence by successfully completing tasks by myself.

The environment is positive and I know that help is on hand should I need it, but it feels good to be trusted and respected straight away.

Rather than just giving me basic tasks to pass the day, I have been exposed to the full range of audit work, bookkeeping, and financial settlement preparation.

The team have also supported my work towards the ICAS qualification by giving me a flexible schedule with study days that I can use to attend workshops or exams.

If I have any questions about coursework, there’s always someone around to give me a hand.

Is a career in accounting right for you?

If you are thinking of going into a career in accounting, then I would advise you to get a feel for the accounting world by reading up on business in general.

You should research different accounting roles and look for work experience as early as possible.

This will give you a taste of the profession and help you decide if it is the right fit for you.

I worked over the summer in a smaller/mid-size firm, and this was beneficial in my career decision.

I had the chance to actually do work by myself, as opposed to just assisting on a small part of a job, and I was able to work closely with people at all stages of the profession.

That level of exposure to accountancy work and the people at different levels is important in helping you know if you can see yourself working in the sector in the years to come.

Building up a bit of knowledge also never hurts in interviews, either!
