The Stewart Ivory Finance for Sixth Formers programme is very much in line with our company ethos and has undoubtedly made a positive impact on the lives of young people in Orkney.
The Stewart Ivory Financial Education Trust (SI) has been delivering short financial awareness courses to senior school pupils in Scotland for the past decade with more than 100,000 students benefiting from the training. Free to schools, the SI courses usually consist of two to three sessions, covering the topics of debt, budgeting, savings, investments and pensions.
Ensuring Scotland-wide availability of training has always been a priority for SI. I am delighted to be running these courses at both Kirkwall Grammar School and Stromness Academy.
The response to the SI training in Orkney is very positive, a lot of our students will end up studying and working away from home and their family support network, so having good, basic financial skills is hugely important; I try to demystify personal finance and give them the tools to look after themselves. The SI training is engaging, practical and relevant to students’ lives. I try to teach them personal responsibility and help them avoid the financial pitfalls that are out there, while also getting across the message about planning for the future.
I feel this is an opportunity to make a positive impact on the lives of our young people as they prepare to leave the protective environments of schools and home and head off to make their mark in the world.
