We are delighted to introduce the latest member of the team, Erik Stevenson.
Despite teaching computing in high school and college, Erik has always had a fascination with accounting.
So, when the time came for Erik to make a change in his life, the way forward became apparent.
“I spent 17 years teaching, and I knew I couldn't carry on doing that till I retired,” Erik said. “I spent a lot of time soul-searching and decided to look into accounting more seriously.”
Erik and I met in the past when he had been teaching in Orkney, and he remembered the community focus of Scholes.
So, when the time came for Erik to move back to Orkney, he knew that it was the perfect place for him to start his new career.
Currently, Erik is a committed trainee accountant who is seeking to learn as much as possible about all areas of the firm.
Having a computer expert on the team has come in handy on more than one occasion, and we look forward to seeing what Erik can achieve as he learns more about the role.
“I’m most looking forward to getting to know the wide range of different people and businesses that are in not just Orkney, but across the country,” added Erik.
“It feels good to be part of such a talented team.”
We asked Erik if he had any advice for other people considering switching to a career in accounting.
“I’d say go for it, as long as you're good with numbers, your maths skills, like algebra, don't need to be outstanding”.
“There is no need to be an expert right away. It took me a little while to get my head around how credits and debits work in journals, but the team at Scholes are incredibly supportive.”
Reflecting on his return to Orkney, Erik mentioned how much he has been enjoying walking his dog in the countryside.
We are sure you will join us in wishing Erik the best of luck as he continues to train with us.
